There are three factors in this dimension, for the Institutional and Entrepreneurial Arts, Local and Global Representation, and Professional Arts Training. Together, they show some of the unique characteristics that help to differentiate the arts from one place to another by character, rather than by volume. These indicators use data available for many counties with a substantial share of the U.S. population.

In 2010, 32 percent of the adult population attended a performing arts event (up from 28 percent in 2009); 13 percent visited an art museum (up slightly from 12 percent). These are the first increases since 2003.
